The diagram stays the same while zones appear and disappear. That makes the spatial relationship between bleed, trim, safe area and gutter explicit.

Run preflight

Bleed

Artwork outside the intended cut so normal trim variation does not expose an unintended white edge.

Common error: Adding a colored border without extending the actual background image.

Calculate a full-bleed canvas

Trim

The finished width and height after the production sheet is cut.

Common error: Treating the outside PDF page size as the final trim size even though it includes bleed.

Calculate page pixels

Safe area

An inside-trim zone that keeps important lettering, faces and panel details away from cutting variation.

Common error: Placing dialogue or panel borders directly on the trim line.

Run comic preflight

Gutter

Clearance near the bound inside edge where content can become hard to see or physically disappear into the binding.

Common error: Using the same inside clearance for every page count, paper and binding.

Five-step page checklist

  1. 1Select the exact product template.
  2. 2Build the page at trim plus required bleed.
  3. 3Keep lettering and key art inside safe and gutter zones.
  4. 4Measure effective DPI at final size.
  5. 5Run preflight and approve the printer proof.

The interactive diagram works instantly in the browser and never needs artwork or an account. Confirm final production rules with your printer or publishing platform.

Comic Bleed, Trim and Safe Area FAQ

Production answers without the guesswork

What is bleed?+

Bleed is artwork extending past the trim line so normal cutting variation does not leave an unintended white edge.

What is the safe area?+

The safe area is inside trim. Important text, faces and panel details stay there to reduce the chance that trimming or binding obscures them.

Is the gutter the same as bleed?+

No. The gutter is the bound inside edge. Its needed clearance depends on binding, paper and page count, while bleed lies outside a cut edge.

Does this replace a printer proof?+

No. The browser tool catches measurable preparation issues, but only the selected printer can approve a production file. Always review its current template and proof.

Are my comic pages uploaded to LlamaGen?+

No. These free checks and exports run in your browser. The tools do not send artwork, filenames or page text to analytics.

Why can printer requirements change?+

Requirements can vary by binding, paper, trim size, region and production update. Every versioned profile links to its official sources and verification date.
