Amazon KDP Manga Formatting Checklist: Print, Cover, and Kindle Files

Preparing manga for Amazon KDP is detail-sensitive because the book is mostly visual. A small production mistake can lead to cropped art, unreadable dialogue, muddy tones, a rejected cover, or a proof copy that looks different from the screen.
This checklist is for creators preparing manga, comics, or graphic novels for KDP. It is especially useful if you create pages with an AI-assisted comic workflow and then assemble them into print or Kindle editions.
Use it after your story and pages are mostly finished. Formatting cannot fix a weak story, but it can protect a good one from avoidable production errors.
Do not export final pages until you know the KDP format.
Choose:
For manga, black-and-white paperback is often the simplest starting point. Color interiors cost more to print, and KDP's print options note that color ink books are printed on white paper and have higher manufacturing cost. If your book uses line art, grayscale, and screentones, test black ink first.
If you want a digital edition, plan for Kindle comic behavior early. Amazon's Kindle Create comic workflow can import PDF, PNG, or JPEG files and add Guided View panels. Guided View helps readers move through a comic one panel at a time on phones and tablets.
Trim size is the final physical size of the book after printing and cutting.

KDP's paperback submission guidelines state that the minimum page count is 24 pages, while the maximum depends on ink, paper, and trim size. KDP also rounds page count up to an even number if needed.
Checklist:
Bleed is required when artwork reaches the page edge. For manga, that often includes full-bleed panels, black backgrounds, speed-line pages, chapter openers, and splash pages.
Amazon's paperback submission guidelines say that if your book has images or elements that bleed to the edges, the manuscript must be uploaded as a PDF. For interior full bleed, KDP says images should extend 0.125" beyond the final trim size from the top, bottom, and outer edges.
Practical rule:
For a 6" x 9" book with bleed, KDP's formatting help gives an example page size of 6.125" wide by 9.25" high. That reflects extra bleed on the outside edge and top and bottom.

KDP accepts different file types for no-bleed manuscripts, but for image-heavy manga a controlled PDF is usually the safest choice.
Before upload:
Amazon lists common failure points including unflattened transparency, locked files, unsupported special characters in file names, missing pages, excessive blank pages, incorrect pagination, and PDF creation logos or watermarks.
Do not finalize the cover until the interior page count is final. The spine changes with page count, paper type, and ink type.
KDP's paperback cover guidance says the cover must be a single PDF file that includes back cover, spine, and front cover as one image. KDP also provides a cover calculator and template generator for size and layout.

Spine text warning: KDP says spine text requires at least 79 pages. If your manuscript has fewer than 79 pages and includes spine text, the cover can be rejected.
A paperback PDF is not automatically a good Kindle comic eBook.
Kindle Create can import PDF, PNG, or JPEG comic files and lets you add Guided View panels. Amazon's comic setup guide explains that Guided View focuses on panels in sequence so readers can comfortably read comics on mobile devices.

comic-0001.jpgKindle Create does not function as a full lettering tool. Amazon's Kindle Create comic help recommends adding text to images before importing. That means your manga pages should already contain final dialogue, captions, and sound effects before the Kindle Create step.
If AI was used to generate actual book content, treat disclosure as part of formatting readiness.
Amazon's content guidelines require authors to inform KDP of AI-generated content when publishing a new book or republishing an existing book. KDP defines AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool, even if you substantially edit afterward. AI-assisted work, such as AI used only to refine or error-check content you created, does not need disclosure.

The safest KDP manga workflow uses original story worlds, original casts, and original visual direction.
KDP's Print Previewer checks uploaded files for issues before submission. Amazon says it can flag problems such as margins, cover size, and fonts, and that KDP also manually checks files after submission.

If KDP flags an issue, fix it in the original source file, export a new PDF, and upload again. Do not patch around the warning unless you understand exactly what changed.
A proof copy is not mandatory, but it is one of the highest-value checks for manga. Screens are bright. Paper is not. Fine tones, small lettering, and dark scenes can change.
