A 128 by 64 sprite sheet divided into eight 32 by 32 frames, with an enlarged character showing crisp nearest-neighbor pixel edges.
Constructed utility example: a 4-column, 2-row sheet becomes eight 32 × 32 frames. Integer scaling enlarges pixel blocks without smoothing.
DIRECT ANSWER

Is this just a mosaic filter?

It redraws the source on a smaller grid, reduces RGB channel levels, then enlarges with nearest-neighbor scaling. The color target is approximate and does not guarantee an exact palette size; manual cleanup may still help.

A practical example

Inspect a reduced pixel grid

Use a concrete input, inspect the output, and check the current limits before choosing your next step.

Example input

Use the 128 × 64 demo sheet as a repeatable input, then set a 32-pixel grid width and an eight-color quantization target.

What to check

  1. Choose the demo PNG, then set the grid width to 32 pixels.
  2. Compare the small-grid silhouette with the original. The source aspect ratio gives a 32 × 16 working grid.
  3. Download the enlarged PNG and inspect details that disappeared during reduction.

Expected output

A 32 × 16 reduced grid is enlarged without smoothing to 640 × 320 pixels for this example.

Current limits

The converter reduces resolution and quantizes RGB channels; it cannot reconstruct hand-drawn pixel detail. Palette labels are quantization targets, so the output does not promise an exact color count.

01 / WHY IT WORKS

Made for production, not just previews.

01

Real pixel grid

Reduce the source to a small canvas, then enlarge without smoothing.

02

Approximate color reduction

Reduce RGB channel levels with a color target. The target is approximate, not a guaranteed output palette size.

03

Private conversion

The source image never leaves your browser.

02 / WORKFLOW

From source to clearly labeled output.

STEP 01

Upload an image

Choose a photo, painting, render, or game reference.

STEP 02

Reduce the grid

Tune grid width and the approximate color target until the silhouette reads clearly.

STEP 03

Download the result

Export a crisp PNG at a practical display size.

03 / FAQ

Clear terms before you build.

Is this just a mosaic filter?

No. It redraws the source on a genuinely smaller grid, reduces its colors, and scales it with nearest-neighbor rendering.

Does it work with transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas are kept when the source format includes alpha.

Does the color target guarantee an exact number of colors?

No. Color reduction rounds each RGB channel to a small set of levels. The 16- and 32-color targets currently use three levels per channel, allowing up to 27 RGB combinations before transparency. Use the result as a visual starting point rather than an exact indexed palette.

Does it use AI credits?

No. The converter is a free local browser utility.
